การใช้ Ought to

Ø แปลว่า “ควรจะ” = should
ใช้กับการคาดคะเน (Prediction) เช่น

·      This stock ought to increase in value.
(สินค้านี้ควรจะเพิ่มมูลค่า)

Ø ใช้กับหน้าที่ที่ควรจะทำ (Duties) เช่น

·      You ought to wash your clothes.
(เธอควรซักเสื้อผ้าด้วยนะ)

Note : รูปปฏิเสธ ought not (to) / oughtn’t (to)

            Ought to ไม่นิยมใช้ตั้งคำถามให้ใช้ Should แทน เช่น
             - Should I clean the room now?
               (ฉันควรทำความสะอาดห้องตอนนี้เลยหรอ)

Ø มีกรณียกเว้นที่เราไม่สามารถใช้ ought to แทน should ได้คือ
ระเบียบข้อบังคับ เช่น

·      Visitors ought to present their identification card to the security guard.
= Visitors should present their identification card to the security guard.
(ผู้เยี่ยมชมควรแสดงบัตรประจำตัวประชาชนต่อเจ้าหน้าที่รักษาความปลอดภัย)

Ø การแสดงความคิดเห็น เช่น

·      I ought to think that this is not the best way to save money.

= I should think that this is not the best way to save money.
(ฉันคิดว่านี่ไม่ใช่วิธีที่ดีที่สุดในการออมเงิน)
