Dare
แบบกริยาแท้ที่มีกรรมมารับ (transitive verb)
1. ก  กล้า dare + sth.

To have the courage required for

Dare + (to) do + sth.

–   The gymnast dared a breathtakingly difficult move.
–   She dares (to) dress differently from others.
–   Who would dare (to) resist him?

  ข กล้าดี, โอหังบังอาจ

Take upon oneself; act presumptuously, without permission;
–   Don’t you dare say such a thing again!
–   He wouldn’t dare do a thing like that.

2. ท้า (ความหมายนี้ต้องใช้กริยาแท้เท่านั้นและต้องตามด้วย to V เสมอ)

To challenge (sb) to do sth. requiring boldness.

Dare + sb + to do + sth.

Openly challenge someone to do something.
–   Who do you dare?
–   I dare you to jump into the sea from this rock.
–   They dared me to dive off the high board.

3. กล้าเผชิญหน้า กล้ายืนหยัดต้านทาน
To confront or oppose boldly, face, brave

–   Daring him to deny the statement

DARE + do + sth.

To be courageous or bold enough to do or try something

–   How dare you call my lawyer?
–   How dare she go?
–   She would not say so. She dare not. She cannot.

ข้อสังเกต
– ‘dare’ ที่ใช้เป็นกริยาแท้จะกระจายหรือผันตามประธาน และมี v to do มาช่วยเมื่อเป็นปฏิเสธหรือคำถาม

o    If he dares (to) show up at her house, I’ll be surprised.
o    Did you dare (to) contradict her?

– ส่วน ‘dare’ ที่ใช้เป็นกริยาช่วยจะไม่กระจายตามประธาน (เหมือน can, may, might) ไม่ต้องมี v to do มาช่วยเวลาเป็นคำถามหรือปฏิเสธ หรือคำสั่งอื่นๆ และมีกริยา (V1) ตามหลังได้โดยไม่ต้องมี to

o   Let him say that if he dare.
o   Dare we tell her the truth?
o   She dare not mention our names.
o   You dare not deny, do you?
o   I daren’t touch it.
o   How dare you?

– ‘dare’ ที่เป็นกริยาแท้แปลว่า “กล้า” จะมี to ตามหรือไม่ก็ได้ แต่ถ้าแปลว่า “ท้า” ต้องมี to ตามหลัง

o   Nowadays, no one dares (to) speak freely about the political situation.
o   I dare you to try and stop me.

– การใช้เป็นกริยาแท้จะใช้ในลักษณะทั่วไป เป็นข้อเท็จจริง ขณะที่การใช้เป็นกริยาช่วยจะเน้นทัศนคติ ความคิด หรือความเกี่ยวข้องโดยตรงกับตัวผู้พูดมากกว่า

1.  I ‘daresay’ Possibly or probably; to think very likely or almost certain; suppose. (slightly formal)
   I dare say = I am quite certain (used in the first person singular present tense)

–    Will they be late? Yes, I daresay.
–    I daresay you’re wrong.
–    Oh, I dare say Jimmy and I will find some way to fill the time while you are away.
–    Will you be there tonight?’ `Oh, I daresay.

2. ‘You dare’ Challenge someone in a joking way to do something
(which you don’t really want them to do)
–   If you dare breathe a word about it, I’ll never speak to you again.
